Tips For Growing Roses In Your Portland Yard

Many homeowners in the Pacific NW are passionate about growing roses in their Portland or Vancouver area yard. Follow these tips to help your roses grow big and beautiful this year.

Get started on the right foot

As soon as you see signs of spring growth, fertilize your roses with an organic or commercial slow-release type fertilizer. Most years, this application should start around April 1st and be done approximately every 6 weeks. Our recommendation is to apply 3 to 4 lbs. per 100 square feet.

PROPER WATERING IS CRUCIAL

When watering your rose bushes, surface watering is better than overhead watering as it helps reduce problems with disease. ½ to 1” of water per week is usually the right amount though you may need to adjust that for the growing site and weather conditions.

Since our summers have been drier, you may need to water more often to keep your roses properly hydrated.

COMMON DISEASE AND INSECT PROBLEMS

A preventative plan is best when it comes to roses or any plants for that matter. The most common diseases for roses are Powdery Mildew, Black Spot and Rust. These are fungal diseases and should be treated with a fungicide every 2 weeks.
While there are several types of insects that love rose plants, aphids and mites are the most serious pests. Damage from insects usually manifests itself in a loss of vigor and color. The best treatment includes the use of insecticides and/or oils every 2 to 4 weeks.
