Root Health Care in Portland
When your Portland, OR trees show signs of root damage, give us a call at General Tree Service!
It’s not surprising that trees need occasional TLC to avoid problems from developing. While many homeowners focus on aesthetics, like cutting down old trees and monitoring for sickness and discoloration in leaves, they’re forgetting a critical component; the roots. The root system of your trees is a solid indication of the health and future of a tree. Plants with poor root systems are not only prone to falling during a storm but also struggle to grow properly. The goal of root health care is prevention as a healthy tree is nature’s best defense against insects and disease.

Root health care treatments
Root Zone Enhancement and Root Collar Excavation are part of our holistic approach as they focus on restoring ideal growing conditions to the root mass.
WHEN IS ROOT ZONE ENHANCEMENT BENEFICIAL?
- Aging tree in declining health
- Alleviate compacted soil
- Buried crown or grade changes
- Girdling roots are present
- Promote growth in younger trees
- Help establish newly planted or transplanted trees
One of our arborists will do a site evaluation to identify factors for the tree’s poor performance and make recommendations based on the root zone available to treat.
ROOT ZONE ENHANCEMENT (RZE)
An air spade is used to expose the root mass of the tree and root pruning is done to remove any girdling roots. A prescription blend of amendments (compost, biochar, mycorrhizae and GTS special blend fertilizer) is mixed into the soil and covered with mulch.
The tree responds to treatment by growing fine feeder roots to better absorb the rich nutrients and water. A smaller procedure, Root Collar Excavation involves exposing only the root flair and buttress roots, pruning any girdling roots before adding our blend of amendments.
Results vary with either procedure but trees usually have more foliage the next growing season and you may notice water is absorbed faster. Other services may be needed to aid in the recovery, like removing dead branches or structural pruning to ensure the tree is strong and balanced.

Common Signs of Unhealthy Roots
At first, it might seem impossible to keep up with the condition of a tree’s roots. Roots are located beneath the dirt, so how can one notice when they aren’t strong and healthy? However, the thing about a tree’s root system is when it’s unhealthy, it begins to show in other areas of the tree. Some common symptoms of unhealthy roots include:
- Poor yearly growth
- Thinning of foliage
- Dead branches
- Underdeveloped leaves
- Brown leaves during grow season
A tree’s roots are much like the bloodstream in humans. If the blood isn’t healthy, the entire body suffers as a result; the same goes for trees.
Common Benefits of Root Health Care
- Longer life expectancy of the tree
- Proper tree growth
- Benefits to the soil surrounding the roots
- Homeowner benefits financially because the tree doesn’t get sick as often
