Do you have a tree or trees that are in need of care? General Tree Service offers its Tree Preservation Grant program to help save trees that would otherwise not get the care they need.
Organizations and individuals in the metropolitan Portland Oregon or Vancouver Washington area are eligible. Get your application by calling General Tree at (503) 461-6535 or (503) 461-6535.
Applications are usually accepted from January 1 until the end of March on any given year.
What is the Tree Preservation Grant program?
Established 15 years ago by John Landon, owner of General Tree Service, the program was an expansion of the voluntary tree preservation work that his company was already doing in the community.
John had a vision to educate and inform the public on the need for protecting and maintaining valuable trees while understanding the benefit of using professionals to care for them.
John’s son, Clint is now the owner of General Tree and wants to continue the work his father started.
The grant will be awarded during Oregon Arbor Week or (if the winner is from Washington) on Washington’s Arbor Day.
WHY WAS THE GRANT CREATED?
As stewards of the Earth, General Tree knows the vital role that trees play in our environment and feel a responsibility to do what we can to protect and preserve them. Our goal is to aid local government, non-profits and deserving individuals who are not able (financially) to preserve valuable and often irreplaceable trees on their own. At the same time, General Tree wants to educate the public on the need for quality arboricultural care to sustain and protect the long term health of all trees.
Who can benefit from our grant?
The grant was founded to benefit local government, non-profit organizations and deserving individuals. Its focus has been on parks, historic sites, museums, schools and low income, governmental or municipal property whose programs are enhanced by trees. Added preference is given to any tree or trees which have a historical or environmental significance.
Organizations or people applying for this grant must be able to show that the tree(s) would not be preserved without help from General Tree. This will help us to determine who has the greatest need and therefore, who benefits most from our help.
What does the Grant cover?
For a 1 year period, General Tree Service will cover all necessary pruning, cabling, bracing, Plant Health Care and fertilizing that the tree(s) require.

Applications are no longer be accepted for 2018 but we will start accepting applications for next year on January 1, 2019. All paperwork must be turned in with a completed application to be considered.

- List of their board of directors or owners of the tree
- Brochures or other materials about their organization
- Financial statements to show their need
The grant will be awarded during Oregon Arbor Week or Washington’s Arbor Day (depending on where the winner is located). Past winners have included the City of Beaverton, Ronald McDonald House, The Pow Wow Tree and Clark Community College.
