Why You Need To Fertilize Trees and Shrubs in your Portland Yard

Serving Families Throughout Portland & the Pacific Northwest
|

The goal of any Plant Health Care program is to keep your trees and shrubs as healthy and vibrant as possible.  Why?

A healthy plant can withstand pressure from insects and diseases much better that a stressed, unhealthy plant.  This is why you need to fertilize trees and shrubs in your Portland Oregon yard.

Fertilization is key to healthy plants

One way we keep your trees and shrubs healthy is to have them on a proper fertilization program. Plants in their natural setting get their nutrient from decaying organic matter such as fallen leaves and decaying plant material. Most plants in the landscape environment do not get these nutrients because most of this organic material (grass clippings, leaves, etc.) is removed.  Because of this, nutrients need to be replaced for your trees, plants and shrubs to be as healthy as possible.

WHAT NUTRIENTS ARE IN OUR FERTILIZER?

General Tree Service supplies these nutrients with our custom tree and shrub fertilizer. Our fertilizer has been developed to supply the nutrients your plants need.

IT CONTAINS THE BASIC NUTRIENTS:

  • Nitrogen
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Sulfur

We also include micro nutrients such as Iron, Manganese and Zinc.

Most of the nutrients are tied up in a slow release formulation, which gradually releases the nutrients over time. This mimics the slow decay of organic matter in a natural setting. Having most of the nutrients tied up in a slow release form also helps minimize the growth spurt you sometimes get if you fertilize with only a quick release fertilizer. Many people don’t know this growth spurt can actually increase the possibility of insect activity!

WHEN’S THE RIGHT TIME TO FERTILIZE?

We fertilize most of our trees in October or November and shrubs in January and February. This allows your plants to utilize the nutrients provided to replenish important building blocks to aid in healthy, vigorous root growth throughout the winter.  Plus, it keeps your trees and shrubs going strong through the heavy demands of spring growth, bloom and the stress of summer heat.
